| Popis: | It is the intent of this document to determine which engineering features along the paved portion of the Apache Trail, State Route 88, between mileposts 201.00 and 220.18 should be considered contributing elements to the historic character of the Apache Trail. This section of the road is informally referred to as the “paved portion” because, not surprisingly, it is that portion of the Apache Trail surfaced with asphalt. An assessment of the features along the unpaved portion will be done in a future document. The end of pavement marks a good point to separate the analysis since there is over a mile of trail from the end of pavement north with no road features. The maintenance history of the paved portion is quite different than that of the unpaved section allowing an analysis of that section in isolation. The Apache Trail is one of most significant historic roads in Arizona. It has been determined to be eligible for the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion A, C, and D. It has also been listed on the States Register of Historic Places, in 1986 the Forest Service placed it in its Scenic Byway Program, and in 1987 Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) designated it an historic road. |
