Popis:	It is shown that the size rather than the electronegativity of the substituent in the 2 position of the indole ring has an effect on the Claisen condensation of 2-substituted 3-indolylacetonitriles with dimethyl carbonate. Carbomethoxylation of the side chain is generally accompanied by methylation of the nitrogen atom of the indole ring.
