The five disorders discussed here—anxiety, phobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, hypochondriasis, and conversion disorder—were once known collectively as the neuroses. The term neurosis is now out of fashion in American psychiatry, however, and the first three of the above disorders are now considered to be anxiety disorders, while the last two are somatoform disorders. Physical symptoms without a demonstrable organic basis that are linked with psychological factors or conflicts characterize somatoform disorders.1(p255) |
