Popis: Several experiments suggest that reactive oxygen metabolites generated after asbestos phagocytosis cause DNA damage. According to recent findings, crocidolite is able to induce DNA strand breaks in vitro. The aim of this study was to find out whether crocidolite asbestos fibers induce in vivo double-strand breaks in the DNA of white blood cells and in the nuclei of lung and liver. Male Wistar rats received a single tracheostoma instillation of 2.5 mg UICC crocidolite asbestos into the right lung. The same dose was injected intraperitoneally. The animals were sacrificed 4 and 13 months after instillation.
