Popis: This essay proposes a model of film adaptation as arrangement using three films based on Cornell Woolrich texts, The Window (1949), Rear Window (1954), and The Bride Wore Black (1968). Using Roland Barthes and other theorists, the essay considers the text as a plurality that traverses multiple works. Not only are versions in dialogue with the source material and with each other, but individual texts – the so-called originals – are themselves intertextual and thus plural. In thinking through the ‘stereographic plurality’ of texts and all the intertexts and influences that comprise both source and versions, the essay argues for an understanding of adaptation as an activity that is porous, mediated, and dynamic.
