Popis: The comorbidity of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and depression is common. The literature suggests that youth with ADHD have a higher rate of depression than youth who are not diagnosed with ADHD. In addition, when both disorders occur together, the symptoms of each are more severe, there is worse functional impairment, treatment may be more challenging, and there is higher level of morbidity (i.e., suicide attempts and hospitalizations). Evidence indicates that early treatment of ADHD symptoms may reduce likelihood of future depressive episodes. Assessment and accurate diagnosis in adolescents may be complicated by the fact that many of the presenting symptoms overlap both disorders. While few large-scale studies have looked at treatment for ADHD and comorbid depression in adolescents, evidence-based recommendations are available to guide the clinician in treating patients who present with both conditions.
