The reactions of [Fe(CO)3–n{P(OMe)3}n(η5-C8H8R″)]+with halide ions : ring opening of η5-bicyclo-octadienyl (R″= H), and methyl halide elimination of η5-cyclo-octatrienyl (R″= N2R, where R = aryl) complexes

Popis: The cyclo-octatrienyl complex [Fe(CO)3–n{P(OMe)3}n(η5-C8H8N2C6H4R′-p)]+(1) undergoes methyl halide elimination with halide ions to give the phosphonate [Fe{PO(OMe)2}(CO)2–n{P(OMe3)}n–(η5-C8H8N2C6H4R′-p)](2)(R′= F or NO2). By contrast, the bicyclo[5.1.0]octadienyl complex [Fe(CO)2{P(OMe)3}(η5-C8H9)][BF4](3) undergoes ring opening to give the η3-cyclo-octatrienyl derivative [FeI(CO)2{P(OMe)3}(η3-C8H9)](4). The mechanisms of the alkyl halide elimination and ring-opening reactions are discussed.
