Obesity is an important public health problem for which pharmacological, behavioral, and surgical treatments are available. The intragastric balloon, a nonsurgical, nonpharmacological, reversible, and repeatable treatment for obesity is considered effective and safe, particularly when associated with a multidisciplinary follow-up. Although studies on psychotherapy for patients using intragastric balloon are scarce, techniques such as cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy, interpersonal psychotherapy, and mindfulness meditation, the most studied in the field of the treatment of obesity, are some of the existing psychological strategies that might help these patients. Herein, the theoretical principles that guide these techniques and how they change dysfunctional behaviors leading to weight gain, as well as evidences of their efficacy are summarized, considering that obesity is a multidimensional phenomenon, in which behavior and weight correlate in a complex and still poorly understood way. |
