Popis: We have developed a C-test to assess L2 Dutch proficiency. The C-test has 8 texts that increase in difficulty level, and was designed for a longitudinal study of adult L2 Dutch learners in the Netherlands. An earlier version of this test was developed by a student for their MA thesis, who piloted 12 texts on 55 L2 Dutch learners. The final version of the C-test has 8 texts: we retained 5 texts from the pilot and added 3 new texts from authentic L2 materials, as the pilot showed that the C-test was less suitable for higher proficiency levels. Our research is still ongoing, but initial analyses indicate that the C-test is a good measure of general Dutch language proficiency. Based on a sample of 182 adults learning Dutch across the Netherlands, there is a strong correlation (.702) between their score on the C-test and the level of Dutch course they are enrolled on (0-A1, A1-A2, A2-B1, B1.1-B1.2, B1.2-B2.1, B2.1-B2.2, C1+). Researchers are welcome to use this C-test in their research. The C-test is being used in two current studies: one study is with learners of L2 Dutch at mixed proficiency levels (see www.aptitudeproject.org for further details) and the second study is with learners of L2 Dutch at beginner level, for which we are using the first 4 texts of the C-test only (see www.mylanguagejourney.org for more details).
