Popis: This paper is concerned with a nonautonomous version of the well-known May-Leonard system, that is, a system like theirs but with time-varying rather than constant coefficients. One consequence of their work is that the solution x exhibits partial survival, in the sense that maxixi(t) is bounded away from 0 even though inf xi(t) =0 for each i. This aspect of the subject is developed here under much weaker assumptions than those in the pioneering paper of May and Leonard. The analysis leads to a surprising resurrection of a hypothesis that was introduced by Vance and Coddington in 1989.
