Popis: Handlooms is a major village industry in India, next to agriculture. It is estimated that there are about 28 lakhs of handlooms in India and that about 140 lakh people are directly associated with it. In Tamil Nadu it is the largest cottage industry and the second largest employment creator next to agriculture, in the unorganised sector. Besides providing direct employment to the weavers, this industry generates additional employment for carpenters, dyers, twisters, and wrappers. Thus, within the state itself, the handloom sector covers approximately 6 per cent of the total working population. The contribution of the handloom sector towards the state income is estimated to be 22 per cent of the total contribution of the industrial sector. It also offers high employment scope for Tamil Nadu. According to the latest available data, the state has about 4,29,000 handlooms, constituting about 11 per cent of the total handlooms in the country. Handloom industry in Tamil Nadu plays an important role in improving economic conditions of the rural poor by providing employment to about 65 lakh people directly or indirectly, as weavers and allied workers. Tamil Nadu has identified 22 locations for establishing handloom clusters with financial assistance from the Central Government. The average annual production of handloom cloth in the state is about 25,000 lakh metres, of which, the handloom co-operatives contribute around 1,200 lakh metres. The Average annual sales of handloom cloth are `.1,500 crore, of which the sales by handloom co-operatives account for `.700 crore. The average annual export of handloom cloth from Tamil Nadu is `.600 crore, of which the share of co-operatives through merchant export is around ` 260 crore. The handloom lungies, which are manufactured in Vellore district, are exported to many parts of India and to the Arab countries. The aim of the study is to analyse the soico-economic conditions of handloom weavers in Vellore district, Tamil Nadu and suggest measures for their improvement. The study is based on primary data.
