Study of molecular structure and interactions in partially fluorinated liquid crystal by infrared spectroscopy

Popis: The influence of fluorination of mesogens on their molecular structure and interactions were studied by the example of 4- n -(4,4,4-trifluorobutyl) benzoic acid. It was shown, that the inductive influence of the CF 3 -group is experienced only by the nearest to it CH 2 -groups, and in benzene ring and in carboxyl group its influence is absent. In crystalline phase the intermolecular hydrogen bonds of the C–F…H–C type are formed between CF 3 group and benzene ring. This leads to the increase of intermolecular interactions and, as a result, to increase of melting temperature.
