Summary The self-association of itaconic acid (H 2 L) was investigated potentiometrically at ionic strength I =1 M in NaClO 4 at 25.00±0.02°C. It was shown that at acid concentrations above 50 m M the tetramers H 8 L 4 , H 7 L 4 − , H 6 L 4 2− , H 5 L 4 3− and the dimers H 2 L 2 2− , HL 2 3− are formed in aqueous solution. For each of these proton itaconate complexes the corresponding stability constant was determined both by a graphical method and by computer calculation. The conception of the computer programs is discussed in detail. |
