Popis: The dredging industry has been particularly responsive to this growing awareness of the effects which it has on the environment. There are numerous examples of research and development undertaken by dredging contractors and organizations, such as the United States Army Corps of Engineers, the Rijkswaterstaat in the Netherlands and the Central Dredging Association, aimed at resolving conflict between the industry and the environment. A large proportion of this work has been directed towards the disposal of unwanted dredged material and particularly the contaminated sediments which are found in some ports and inland waterways. There are other areas where the industry and the profession have been active and major contributions have been made in the identification of the beneficial uses of dredged materials, the development of plant and methods which can be used to improve the environment generally, prevent coastal erosion and provide coastal protection, amongst others.
