Popis: Any newcomer to the field of infrared will be surprised at the range of different device technologies covered in the remaining chapters of this book. The reason for the wide choice is that there is no single device technology that satisfies the broad range of applications and operating conditions. For example: HgCdTe detectors can achieve much higher sensitivities than thermal detectors but the present need for cryogenic cooling, slower time to operation and higher power consumption may override the higher sensitivity for many applications. There are a large number of parameters that need consideration when selecting a detector technology. The purpose of this introductory chapter is therefore two-fold. The first is to introduce some of the commonly used parameters and measurement techniques that are referenced in the later chapters. The second is to indicate the strengths and weaknesses of different infraredi technologies.
