Polymers form the basis of the chemical replication system (nucleic acids, enzymes), food chain (polysaccharides, proteins), shelter (wood, concrete, polystyrene insulation, glass windows), furnishings(nylon, wool, acrylic rugs; coatings, polyethylene waste paper baskets, laminate counter tops), clothing (acrylic sweaters, cotton socks, leather shoes, segmented polyurethane underwear, wool suits, polyester shirts), and recording and communication (written history on parchment, papyrus paper; paintings with canvas and polymerizing oils; optical fibers, GDs, microelectronics). The American Chemical Society Division of Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering (PMSE), is one of the largest and most prestigious Divisions with a membership of over 6,000. This chapter gives an account of the formation and development of PMSE and summarizes its missions, values and principles. |
