Fire tests are used to classify built-up and prepared roof covering materials and systems based on their ability to resist the growth and penetration of fires of varying degrees of severity. Spread of flame tests are usedto determine the flaming fire growth characteristics on the surface of materials and systems, while intermittent flame and burning wood brand tests measure fire penetration resistance by establishing the capability of a roof covering material or system to protect combustible decking from ignition. The fire test performances of spray-applied foam systems, asphalt glass mat shingles, and aluminum shingles with various underlayment systems, as well as weathered asphalt organic-felt shingles, are examined. The just mentioned systems and materials perform similarly to the more traditional classified systems. |
