This chapter considers the impact of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons on the nuclear nonproliferation regime. It also cites the importance of the United States and allied leadership in understanding regime adherence. The United States has been able to persuade reluctant adherents to the regime through low-cost diplomacy, high-cost diplomacy, positive inducements, and coercion. However, the United States could lose influence and the ability to shape the global order by weakening or withdrawing from its alliance commitments as the global system becomes increasingly multipolar. The chapter also proposes five brief policy recommendations and possible improvements to nuclear disarmament. It highlights how the current trends suggest that dissatisfaction over the lack of fairness in the treaty could have a long-lasting impact in the future. |
