Popis: Patient records from acute hospitals in four health districts in the UK, altogether serving a population of one million, have been assigned to diagnosis related groups (DRGs). The workload over the period 1979–83 was examined for changes in complexity of case and in treatment practices. Using a statistical technique of separation into components, marked reductions in DRG-specific lengths of stay were identified in combination with small changes in overall casfe complexity. The analysis was repeated after excluding cases with extremely long stay lengths or chronic illness to examine the effect of these cases on the stability of the results.
