The all-in-one-room schoolhouse setting is essentially a modern version of bedside teaching, especially when it comes to debriefing. Sometimes, when adverse events have occurred, the learners may perceive debriefing in the same room where the event occurred to be stressful. On the other hand, debriefing in the same room may be helpful in jogging the learners' memories regarding the sequence of events, especially if a video replay of the scenario is not available. A downside to having functions and personnel in the same room is that there will be extraneous noise during simulation that will absorb and distract some of the students' attention. This detracts from the realism that the instructor is trying to achieve. In addition, if the room is not large, it may be difficult to move about to provide care for their patient. The primary potential problem with this setup is that if you as the teacher/operator are trying to allow the learners to function independently, the fact that they can see you in the room often makes that reality harder to achieve. Just as the students need to adapt and adjust to make the most of their simulation experiences, so too must their instructors. All too often, instructors are so accustomed to protecting their real patients from potential harm by their students that the instructors fail to allow their students full access to their simulated patients. |
