Popis: | What is the state of contemporary research on Congress? Entering the decade of the 1980s, the level of research commitment by congressional scholars seems high, the quality of output has been sustained. Books and articles on the workings of Congress continue to multiply. Theory-building, while pluralistic and eclectic, nevertheless shows promise of accumulated findings and at least the hint of unification to come. In general, research on Congress has arrived at a new level of maturation. This essay has two main objectives: (1) to provide an overview of some of the most important books written about Congress over the past decade, and (2) to speculate, briefly, about trends and profitable directions for research in the 1980s. For reasons of space as well as time, only a few of the many excellent articles written during this period will be singled out.
