Blood components can be manufactured from whole blood or automated apheresis collections. Post-collection processing is simpler with apheresis components than whole blood, because whole blood requires post-collection centrifugation for component separation and leukoreduction, which are part of the apheresis procedure. There are a number of combinations of products that can be collected from a donor at one sitting. However, time intervals between collections, annual red blood cell loss (RBC), and plasma loss must be monitored to ensure donor safety and product quality. |
