Popis: | We detail the association of omega-3 fatty acids with the following neuropsychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders: intellectual disability, including adrenoleukodystrophy and adrenomyeloneuropathy; schizophrenia; depression; autistic spectrum disorder (ASD); and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In addition to considering the lipid profiles of these disorders, consideration is given to the evidence for a therapeutic role of polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) interventions in each disorder. We conclude that, while there is compelling evidence for the role of fatty acids in the pathophysiology of many of these disorders, in general the standard of clinical PUFA trials has been relatively poor thus far. Such trials have frequently been characterized by having poor statistical power, poor entry eligibility and selection criteria, and too short a duration. This deficiency urgently needs to be addressed. |
