Popis: A method is described for the numerical characterisation of the hue of solvent-soluble dyes. The method used is based on the absorption spectra of the dyes in the visible region and is similar to the CIE system of colour specification, but the definition of the tristimulus values has been changed to make them proportional to the dye concentration, so that the chromaticity co-ordinates are independent of dye concentration. A soluble dye is then characterised by a pair of modified chromaticity co-ordinates, and these co-ordinates correlate well with a visual assessment of the appearance of the dyes when incorporated in transparent media. Under favourable conditions the use of these co-ordinates makes possible the quantitative prediction of metameric colour matches from purely spectrophotometric data.
