Japan is situated in one of the most technically active areas in the world, where the Pacific and Philippine Sea Plates are subducting the Eurasian Plate and thus stress and strain of the crust are accumulated (Fig. 1). This occurrence causes a lot of earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions striking towns, cities, and coastal areas sometimes followed by destructive disasters. Therefore, efforts for the prevention and mitigation of disasters caused by such phenomena have been continued as one of the most important national programs in Japan (Fig. 2). |
