Popis: This study is to assess the effect on the space-charge force in the beam due to the presence of a conducting boundary in a Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ). A cylindrical symmetric perfectly conducting wall is assumed as a first approach in the calculation. The potential field can be written in a mode-expansion representation. Using the lowest three modes, we have found that the accuracy in the calculations for the force can be better than 90%. Our data indicates that the presence of the wall can make significant differences in the output characteristics of a beam. The sensitivity of the calculations to various aspects of the model and the wall effect for a beam with longitudinal periodicity are also examined.
