The effect of pressure on the ferroelastic phase transition in LnP5O14

Popis: The effects of hydrostatic pressure on the ferroelastic phase transition in CeP 5 O 14 , PrP 5 O 14 and SmP 5 O 14 crystals were investigated by high-pressure Raman scattering, and the values of dT c dp of these crystals determined. According to the results of the high-pressure Raman spectra and the lanthanide contraction effect, we suggested that the ferroelastic phase transition of LnP 5 O 14 crystals is induced by coupling between the soft optic and acoustic modes. The pressure and the lanthanide contraction reduce the anharmonicity of the soft optic mode. The increase in the phase transition temperature T c with pressure and lanthanide contraction is due to a decrease of the coupling between the soft optic and acoustic modes.
