Popis:	The performance of the optimum receiver for digital transmission systems is derived, which uses M-ary PAM baseband signalling on bandpass channels. For the example of a data transmission over twisted pairs the results are compared with the performance of suboptimum receivers. It is shown that the application of a simple threshold detector with decision-feedback equalization (DFE) causes only a small loss of 1.5 dB as compared to a Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimation (MLSE)
