Popis: | Many advances in the management of cystic fibrosis (CF) have led to improved life expectancy and new and emerging comorbidities. Advances in our understanding of the role and metabolism of fat-soluble vitamins mean that we now need to consider vitamin status in the context of modern disease. Most patients with CF, particularly those who are pancreatic insufficient, are at risk of fat-soluble vitamin deficiencies. With modern management, the overt signs and symptoms of vitamin A and E deficiency are rarely seen. It is recognized that subclinical deficiencies may play an increasing role. All patients with CF should have plasma fat-soluble vitamin levels checked annually and supplemental doses adjusted accordingly. Attention should also be given to the emerging problem of hypervitaminosis A and E. |
