Introduction As the global population ages, healthcare providers must prepare for the complexities associated with caring for older adults, defined according to the WHO, as being over the age of 60.1 Healthcare providers need opportunities to practice and master skills and competencies associated with care of older adults; this can be done effectively with simulation. Simulated patients/participants (SP), well people trained to portray other individuals, are an effective choice when training to achieve the necessary skills for caring for older people. When working with older SPs, it is important to recognise physiological changes in their physical, cognitive and sensory systems associated with normal ageing2 which may require unique consideration and adaptations by simulation educators. Methods SP educators from two different countries, with diverse context and backgrounds, collaborated through an iterative, consensus-based process to create a framework for working with older SPs.3 Content was also informed by older SPs. Results A practical three-phase framework was developed. The framework includes specific strategies that synthesise elements of best practices related to simulation methodology4 with relevant clinical evidence and clinical examples. Discussion and Conclusion Effective engagement with older SPs in simulations is achievable through investing resources in preparing, training, and ensuring their well-being. The framework provides healthcare simulation educators with knowledge, tools and strategies to ensure that older SPs and simulation communities have the right support to safely and effectively contribute to simulation-based education. This presentation will describe the key components of the collaborative framework and how simulation educators can use the framework in their practice.
