We report on the crystallographic structure of the novel metallophthalocyanine derivative 2,3:12,13-dibenzophthalocyaninato-Zn(II), which shows extraordinary order properties in thin films grown by molecular beam deposition (MBD). To determine the three-dimensional unit-cell, epitaxial ZnDBPc films, about 30 nm thick, were grown on KCl(001) substrates and examined by reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The crystal symmetry is triclinic, and the unit-cell contains a single molecule. Based on the diffraction data, a structure model is proposed. Like ordinary phthalocyanines, the planar molecules are stacked in columns whose stacking direction ( b -axis) is inclined to the substrate normal. High-resolution TEM images along the b -axis show a cross-sectional view of the periodic column arrangement, which is in accordance with the diffraction data. |
