Popis: Archaeological monitoring and building recording were carried out during conversion of the Grade II Listed stables at Manor Farm, Wootton Wawen on behalf of Allens Caravans Ltd. An Historic England Level 1 photographic record was made of the stables before any conversion work was undertaken. During this work it became apparent that the northsouth run of stables have been converted from a building constructed as a shelter shed, as evidenced by the timber uprights along the front of the building, infilled with brick, and with heightened doors to allow for horses to enter. Map evidence, and the use of breeze blocks to partition the building, suggests the conversion to stables took place in the mid to late 20th century. A programme of archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken during the excavation of foundation trenches and the reduction of internal areas for the building conversion. This revealed that the brick walling of the northern wall of the building was set on a stone plinth which may have been the footing for an earlier, timber-framed building, similar to other timber-framed buildings within the farm complex. A gully within the northern part of the building contained a series of postholes and may have represented an internal wall within the earlier building. Other features within the building may have related to its function as a shelter shed in the 18th and 19th centuries.
