Popis: Lupinus albus cv. ‘Ultra’ was grown in a controlled environment at two humidity levels (4 mbar vapour pressure deficit (vpd) day and night; 13 mbar vpd day and 10 mbar night). Water was restricted at one of five growth stages and seed yield and yield components were measured. Water stress after flowering reduced seed yield compared with well-watered control. Preflowering stress treatments reduced seed yield under low humidity but not under high humidity. Pod number was the main yield component affected. Early stress reduced pod numbers more than did late stress, which reduced numbers of seeds per pod and nitrogen percentage of seed. Stress stimulated seed growth. Number of flowers formed was higher under low humidity. Apart from the preflowering treatments, low humidity did not significantly reduce total seed yield or pod numbers, although main stem yield and pod number tended to be reduced.
