The cultures of social media and prosumerism enter the domain of education and power a shift towards learner-centred active learning. This motivates research to develop and evaluate a new instructional and learning strategy that is built on the reuse of student-generated content. The present study proposes an approach, called Self- Flipped teaching & learning, where students work in a computer-supported collaborative environment and produce content as part of their own learning (the self part of the name). Instructors can use the produced content in their teaching materials for other students in the flipped classroom pedagogical model (the flip part of the name). The focus of the study is on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects and higher education, and the aim is to test the feasibility of the proposed approach by looking at (i) requirements for the students to be able to create quality content as part of their learning, and (ii) issues of reusing this content for teaching other students. |
