The comprehensive data on the thermodynamics of metal–ligand compleх formation in hydrophobic and hydrophilic ionic liquids (ILs) are summarized along with distribution coefficients ( D ) for crown ether–assisted extraction from an aqueous phase into an IL. Operating with stability constant data (log K ), it is demonstrated that ILs should be characterized not as “superpolar”, but as quite normal polar solvents. Some correlations between log K and log D values are discussed and interpreted. It is demonstrated that complex stability and metal chemical speciation both in aqueous and IL phases play essential roles in extraction efficacy and in the IL-based liquid and supported membrane performance. The data on chelating agent–enhanced electrokinetic separation of cations with IL-based liquid membranes are provided and are interpreted in terms of complex formation and chemical speciation. |
