Binet first developed the concept of a test on general intelligence as a tool for the French army. With it, one could see whether new recruits had specific physiological problems, such as needing glasses (which were still prohibitively expensive at that time). The test assessed physical as well as mental abilities. Binet found some general correlation between age and physical/mental performance, which he then postulated as developmental “stages.” He then adapted the test for children, as he found that some adults were “retarded” in their abilities, i.e., performing like young children and atypically to their age. |
