Popis: Heparinization of polymers1,2, either ionically or covalently, has been one of the techniques used with varying degrees of success to impart thromboresistance to materials. For example, the covalent coupling of heparin to polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) has resulted in a heparin-PVA hydrogel which appears to retain blood compatibility in vitro3,4, in the absence of significant heparin release. It is the aim of this paper to report on the chemical characterization of the heparin-PVA hydrogel in terms of heparin content and point of coupling. The complexity and heterogenity of heparin make this a difficult task for this or any heparinized biomaterial.
