Popis: | Cardiothoracic operations are associated with a significant risk of serious complications, including neurological injury and death. This misfortune is usually related to the underlying cardiac or respiratory disease or a complication of surgery, and not anaesthetic practice below an acceptable standard. However, an accusation of negligence, possibly years later, can draw the anaesthetist into unpleasant, adversarial litigation. Good contemporary records demonstrating not only attention to the core business of cardiothoracic anaesthesia, that is, maintenance of adequate oxygenation, ventilation, and organ perfusion pressure, but also consistently high standards of practice are of paramount importance. Implicit in good practice is careful preoperative assessment and optimal preparation for anaesthesia and surgery as well as adequate explanation of procedures and warning of the risks. It also requires the prompt recognition, explanation and treatment of all injuries, whether caused by misfortune or negligence. |
