I read with great interest the paper written by Ozin et al. [1], describing the presence and diagnosis of amebic infestation in Turkish patients with active ulcerative colitis (UC). They searched for stool Entamoeba histolytica antigen by using ELISA in 111 patients with active ulcerative colitis. They found the amebiasis infestation in 35 (31.5%) of the subjects and the clinical, laboratory and endoscopic findings of those cases were similar to amebiasis-negative cases. I certainly agree that UC sometimes can simulate or co-exist with amebiasis. Althoughmany other previous reports had also described a high prevalence of amebiasis in UC [2], the clinical importance of these data is not certain. Similar to the present study [1], previous epidemiological studies did not report the therapy response and probable extra-intestinal amebic features in study group. Moreover, despite the very high prevalence of reported amebiasis cases in UC, surprisingly few cases have been described, regarding severe clinical |
