Metal/ceramic interfaces play an important, sometimes controlling role in metal matrix and ceramic matrix composites. It is well established that the adhesion and mechanical properties of interfaces determine strongly the properties of those composites. Therefore, it is of great interest to study the mechanical properties of the interfaces. As a prerequisite, the structure and composition of heterophase boundaries have to be determined. The Nb/Al[sub 2]O[sub 3]-interface serves as a model system since both constituents are representative materials: Nb for a bcc metal and Al[sub 2]O[sub 3] as a technologically important ceramic. Furthermore, many properties of Nb and Al[sub 2]O[sub 3] are well known. In the present short note some recent observations on different Nb/Al[sub 2]O[sub 3]-interfaces will be reported with emphasis put on the HREM studies. |
