This study will investigate whether pandemic fatigue has weakened the relationship between affective empathy, public health measures taken during the COVID-19 pandemic and vaccination intention against COVID-19. Prior research from 2020 indicates that affective empathy predicts support for physical distancing, mask-wearing and lockdowns, but these studies were conducted early in the pandemic before pandemic fatigue had set in to most pandemic-affected countries. Because pandemic fatigue may have a negative impact on motivation to combat the pandemic among the population and potentially prolong the pandemic, it is important to know if predictors of public health adherence are hindered by pandemic fatigue. This is the second of two studies: Study 2 will assess whether manipulating empathy for vulnerable others promotes motivation to adhere to health measures and vaccination intention in a pandemic-fatigued population. |
