REASONS for quality loss in farm-stored wheat and barley were studied for three years. Paired bins at several sites were instrumented to determine internal conditions. Grain samples were taken at ten-day intervals to determine moisture content, insect population, insect damage, sprouting, and mold development. Aeration of one bin from each pair was used to determine potential for control of loss. Annual losses for the area were estimated to be 5% of stored grain value. Well managed aeration was found to offer nearly complete control of loss. |
