Introduction: Impairment of the quality of life and body composition are markers of advanced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD); however, few studies evaluated these indicators in smokers and in patients with early disease. Objectives: Our aims were to evaluate quality of life, exercise functional capacity and body composition and their relationship in smokers, mild/moderate COPD and nonsmokers controls. Individuals and: Methods: Were evaluated 32 smokers, 32 mild/moderate COPD patients and 32 nonsmokers. Pre-and post-bronchodilator spirometry, bioimpedance measurements, six minutes walk distance (6MWD) and Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) were evaluated. Results: COPD patients had decreased fat-free mass (FFM) (p=0.02), FFM index (p=0.008), 6MWD (p=0.004) and impairment of general health in the following domains of the SF-36: functional capacity (p Conclusion: Impairment of quality of life, reduced lean body mass and worsening of exercise functional capacity is present is smokers and patients with early COPD. |
