Popis: Neutron capture therapy (NCT) experiments have demonstrated improved long-term tumour regression compared to untreated and X-ray treated tumours. However, it has not yet been proven whether the damage to the tumour mass stems from NCT reactions as a result of the boron compound in the tumour cells or as a result of microvascular damage in the tumour microvasculature. Goodman et al 1 investigated the ultrastructural microvasculature response to BNCT in the CD344 rat glioma model. They observed changes in capillary endothelia in the peritumour region but not in normal microvasculature after neutron exposures of up to 4×1012 n cm−2. However, tumour control was not demonstrated and, as a consequence, the threshold for concomitant normal capillary damage at therapeutic doses was not elucidated.
