A stopping muon beam has been constructed at LAMPF. This channel operates in the momentum range of 25–250MeV/c. Peak stopping rates are 1.5 × 10 4 μ − /( μ A s g/cm 2 ) and 7 × 10 4 μ + /( μ A s g/cm 2 ). Contamination levels are exceptionally low: less than 0.5% for electrons and less than 0.1% for pions. A separated “surface” beam has been developed with stopping densities as high as 3 × 10 6 μ + /( μ A s g/cm 2 ). Details are given of design calculations, construction and measurements on the completed beam line. |
