Popis: | Synopsis The taphonomy of Devonian lacustrine fish-beds from The Upper Flagstone Group of the Middle Old Red Sandstone of Caithness has been studied at Holborn Head and Lythmore near Thurso. The beds of carbonate/organic laminites are dominated by Osteolepis panderi and contain less common Thursius, Dipterus, Mesacanthus and ?Diplacanthus. The abundance of O. panderi may reflect opportunistic expansion of a species in the absence of a large predator. Mass mortality horizons within the fish beds are associated with bundles of dolomitic laminae. Articulation of preserved carcasses of Osteolepis is best in the central parts of the beds, deposited in low energy conditions in the deepest lake phase. A preferred orientation of carcasses between 150° and 180° is ascribed to weak currents caused by seiches or lake overturn. The similarity of the fish beds at the two localities is such that they are probably lateral equivalents. |
