In this contribution we will focus on the investigation of atmospheric properties using laser radiation ranging from the ultra-violet to the infrared spectral region. The laser is an ideal instrument for this purpose due to its outstanding properties such as large spectral brightness and small angular divergence. In recent years lasers with discrete and continuous wavelength tunability got available. They can now be used to measure specific gaseous components of the atmosphere. So the laser got also important for the remote sensing of pollutants and other trace constituents. In the following a survey of methods used to date to investigate the atmosphere will be given. |
