Popis: Fairy tales provide constrained images of the girlhood rite of passage, and yet at the same time narrativise unruly transgressions of prohibition. I have charted the phase of adolescent liminality in the feminine fairy tale rite-of-passage narrative, where conventional rules and restrictions temporarily dissolve. Violating prohibitions precipitates metamorphosis, and in the teen fairy tales under analysis this is principally figured as the transformation that occurs when the girl comes to knowledge, particularly forbidden knowledge that is ordinarily denied her. This is often knowledge about mechanisms and abuses of masculine power, and discovering ways to resist it. Where the canonical fairy tale characterises the girl’s curiosity and desire to know as a punishable vice, these revisions work to characterise knowledge as power and an instigator of social change in the heroine’s world. This chapter offers suggestions for future work on analyses of teen fairy tale screen texts across a range of national and multimedia contexts.
