Introduction: Multiple studies have proposed that diabetes mellitus increases the risk of active tuberculosis. The increasing prevalence of diabetes mellitus in tuberculosis endemic areas may adversely impact on spreading of tuberculosis. Scope of this study is assessment of prevalence of diabetes mellitus and associated factors in pulmonary tuberculosis. Method and Material: This case control study was carried out on pulmonary tuberculosis during a period of 12 years from 2004-2016 in Iran. The control group were symptomatic respiratory patients without preceding history of active pulmonary tuberculosis in the same clinic. Comparisons between groups were made using the Chi-square test and multivariate logistic regression was used to calculate adjusted odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals for comparison of diabetes mellitus prevalence among tuberculosis patients across different groups. Results: out of 522 case and control patients, mean age was 50.05±20 years and 40.4% was male. There was a higher prevalence of diabetes in tuberculosis patients than in control patients and the rate was found to be 26.5% with adjusted OR of 3.54. There was a statistically significant association of diabetes in tuberculosis patients with older age (P Conclusion: Diabetes mellitus prevalence is significantly higher among Tuberculosis patients compared to the general population. The mean age of Tuberculosis patients with diabetes mellitus is significantly higher than expected in Tuberculosis patients alone |
