Popis: Starlings were netted from the lower perches of a communal roost during winter. Windspeed on the evening of capture was a significant factor affecting the mean body mass of adult Starlings, heavier birds being netted on relatively windy nights. After allowing for variation in mean winglength and windspeed on the night of capture, mean body mass was negatively correlated with both long-term average (expected) temperature (significant for all age-sex classes) and prevailing temperature (significant for males only). Long-term average temperature was the most important factor determining the winter body mass of Starlings, except in the case of adult males for which prevailing temperature was more important.
